Updated on the 18th March 2026. The amount of one-way street crash compensation you can claim is dependent on the type of injury suffered in the incident, the severity, and whether you incurred financial losses. These can range from relatively minor fractures to life-changing brain damage, depending on the impact of the collision. What Is A One-Way Street Crash?

A one-way street crash can happen if a person does not navigate the road in the way that has been instructed on road signs.

The Highway Code provides rules, some backed by law, on using the road safely. Rule 143 states that traffic is required to follow the road signs and travel in the stated direction.

Head-on collisions can occur from a vehicle driving directly at you in the wrong direction, and there could be a side-impact collision if a road user turns the wrong way in the wrong lane.

You could be eligible to claim for the injuries you sustained from your one-way street crash if you demonstrate that:

  • A road user owed you a duty of care
  • They breached this duty of care
  • This breach caused your injuries

Payouts For A One-Way Street Crash

The road traffic accident compensation that could be awarded for a one-way street crash will depend on what injury you have sustained, how severe it is, and whether you have lost money as a direct result of this harm.

The Judicial College Guidelines (JCG) are an important document that is often used by solicitors to calculate personal injury compensation for their clients. The reason for this is that the JCG is made up of a wide variety of injuries, severities, and suggested compensation brackets. This can provide an invaluable blueprint when valuing general damages, the head of claim that compensates claimants for the pain and suffering they have experienced.

Compensation Brackets

Below you will find a table containing several carefully sourced JCG brackets. Please use our table only for guidance, as these are not confirmed amounts for one-way street crash claims. Lastly, take note that the top entry is not from the JCG.

How Do The Whiplash Reforms Work?

The Whiplash Reforms Programme changed how you claim for whiplash and soft injuries. Additionally, it is now mandatory to have a medical assessment in order to claim whiplash. The Whiplash Injury Regulations 2021 outline that if a whiplash or soft tissue injury is sustained by you or a passenger over 18, you must now claim through the government’s Official Injury Claims Portal if it is valued at £5,000 or less. The fixed tariffs set in legislation will be used to value your injury; two of these entries are shown in the table above.

If you have an additional injury and the combined whiplash injury is over £5,000, you won’t need to claim using this particular portal and can claim compensation in the standard way. But the tariffs will still apply.

The Road Traffic Act 1988 and The Highway Code outline that a road user has a duty to take reasonable care in navigating the roads to prevent the risk of harming others. You could be eligible to claim if this was breached.

Types Of Injuries From A One-Way Street Crash

The nature, severity, and type of injury you could suffer in a one-way street crash can all vary.

Injuries can include:

These injuries can all vary in severity; because of this, compensation can differ, as depicted in the Judicial College Guidelines shown further up this guide.

How To Claim For A One-Way Street Crash

To claim for a one-way street crash, you must collect as much supportive evidence as you can and also adhere to the legal time limit. Below, we will discuss both of these elements in detail so that your one-way street crash claim is in the strongest possible position.

Gathering Evidence To Support Your Claim

After a one-way street crash, proving another road user’s liability for any resulting injuries often relies on compelling evidence, such as dashcam or CCTV footage. Such evidence validates your version of events and can show how another road user acted negligently. Other documents that can support a one-way street crash claim include:

  • Medical records documenting your injuries and prognosis
  • Photographs of any visible injuries
  • Pictures or footage from the accident scene, including car locations and road signs
  • Registration numbers, contact and insurance details of any drivers involved

Adhering To The Legal Time Limit

You typically have 3 years to start your one-way street crash claim from the date the incident occurred, as per the Limitation Act 1980. However, the legislation does exempt certain parties from this legal time limit. To find out more about the exemptions, please head over to our other guide on the time limit for car accident claims.

Did you know that our solicitors can gather evidence on behalf of clients? If you think this would make your life easier during the claims process, please connect with an advisor to learn more about how our solicitors can help you in this challenging time.
