In this informational guide, we examine pedestrian accident statistics for reported road casualties in Great Britain in 2022, which were published by the Department for Transport (DfT) on 28 September 2023. During 2022:

  • 385 pedestrian fatalities occurred.
  • 5,091 pedestrians sustained serious injuries.
  • 13,041 pedestrians were slightly injured.

The Department for Transport is the government department responsible for supporting the UK’s transport networks. As part of the DfT’s role, it publishes statistics about incidents on Great Britain’s roads.

This informational guide covers pedestrian deaths and statistics related to the number of pedestrians who have been seriously injured. We’ll also examine common causes of pedestrian accidents based on the reported road casualties during 2022.

If you’ve suffered pedestrian injuries, you may wonder if you could claim compensation. After examining statistics, we’ll examine the eligibility criteria you must meet in order to have a valid pedestrian accident compensation claim. Should you meet these criteria and wish to pursue a personal injury claim, a No Win No Fee solicitor from Advice could help. To conclude, we’ll look at how instructing a No Win No Fee solicitor could be beneficial.

Information About Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Throughout this guide we will be looking at examples of pedestrian accident statistics taken from the Reported Road Casualties in Great Britain: Pedestrian Factsheet.  These are some of the Department for Transport’s official statistics for 2022. This pedestrian factsheet was published on the 28th of September 2023.

This government resource provides information on reported pedestrian casualties on Great Britain’s roads. The factsheet covers the period from 2004 onwards. Information for the period 2018 – 2022 is specifically highlighted to illustrate the main trends in collisions between vehicles and pedestrians as well as the casualties involved in such collisions.

How Many Pedestrians Are Fatally Injured Due To Road Traffic Accidents?

Highway Code rule 204 describes pedestrians as being the most at risk from road traffic, making them one of the most vulnerable road users. Rules 205-210 in the Highway Code require that drivers give pedestrians extra care. Whether on the pavement or when crossing the road, pedestrians should expect to be safe.

Pedestrian Fatalities

In 2022, there were a total of 19,327 reported pedestrian casualties in Great Britain. Of these, 385 people lost their lives in a pedestrian road accident. This represents an increase on figures for 2021 which saw 361 deaths and 2020 which saw 346 deaths.

Overall, reported fatalities in pedestrian accident statistics have fallen from a high of 675 in 2006 to the most recent figure of 385. During the same period, the total number of pedestrians killed or injured has fallen from 30,982 in 2006 to 19,327 in 2022. However, the lowest figure for pedestrian casualties was 14,750 in 2020.

In the graph below we have included information on pedestrian deaths per year in Great Britain. Figures are taken from the Dft resource linked earlier in this guide.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics On How Many Serious Injuries Are Suffered On The Road

As we can see from the pedestrian accident statistics above, the majority of those harmed in reported road collisions involving all vehicles are either seriously or slightly injured. According to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) information on driving offences, serious injuries are those which fall within the scope of Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH).

Examples of serious and potentially life-changing injuries which could be reported as pedestrian casualties include:

  • Fractured or broken bones.
  • The loss of a limb.
  • Dislocations.
  • Internal bleeding and organ injuries.

Figures for serious pedestrian casualties as published in the reported road casualties factsheet include:

  • 2018 saw 6,696 serious pedestrian injuries.
  • In 2019, 6,444 pedestrians suffered serious injuries while on the roads.
  • In 2020, this figure was 4,330 seriously injured pedestrians.
  • 2021 saw 4,978 pedestrians suffer serious casualties.
  • In 2022, this went up to 5,901 serious injuries.

If you have suffered a serious injury you could make a pedestrian accident claim.

What Are The Casualty Rates For Pedestrians?

Next we will look at casualty rates per mile travelled. We can see that in 2022, the pedestrian casualty rate per billion miles walked were a total of 1,331 casualties.

This breaks down (per billion miles walked) for 2022 as:

  • 27 pedestrian fatalities.
  • 406 serious injuries.
  • 898 slight injuries.

In the table below we look at casualty rates per mile travelled as a pedestrian (per billion miles) for the previous five years.

202126362822
202024302704

How Are Pedestrian Accidents Commonly Caused?

In the pedestrian accident statistics from the factsheet, we can see contributory factors relating to reported road collisions with pedestrians. The statistics show how pedestrians can contribute to such accidents taking place.

Contributory factors include pedestrians:

  • Failing to look properly – 9,685.
  • Being in a hurry, being careless or reckless – 3,475
  • Failing to judge the speed or path of a vehicle – 3,190
  • Being impaired by alcohol – 2,077.
  • Crossing a road when they are masked behind a parked or stationary vehicle – 2,035
  • Wearing dark clothing at night – 1,398
  • Playing or other dangerous action on the road – 1,154
  • Using the wrong crossing – 1,033

The full breakdown of common causes of pedestrian accidents can be seen in the DfT resource.

Looking at vehicle and pedestrian accident statistics, we can see that the most common contributory factors for vehicles being involved in a collision are:

  • The driver or rider of a vehicle failing to look properly – 6,156
  • The rider or driver acting carelessly, in a hurry, etc. – 2,364
  • Drivers or riders failing to judge the speed or path of a pedestrian – 1,517

These contributory factors could lead to incidents such as a pedestrian being hit at a junction because a driver was acting recklessly. To find out when you could make a pedestrian claim against a driver, please contact our team.

What Is A Pedestrian Accident Claim?

Now that we have discussed pedestrian accident statistics, we will look at what a pedestrian accident claim is.

All road users, such as vehicle drivers and bicycle or motorcycle riders, have a duty of care. They should ensure that they do not put other road users at unnecessary risk by using the roads safely and responsibly. As part of this duty, they should adhere to the Road Traffic Act 1988. In conjunction with this, the Highway Code includes rules and guidelines for navigating the roads, and any relevant sections must be adhered to.

If you were injured in a road traffic accident, you could make a pedestrian accident claim. However, you must be able to show that the other road user (the driver of a vehicle, etc) was at fault. To make a claim for a pedestrian accident, you must show that:

  • You were owed a duty of care by the other road user.
  • The other road user breached their duty of care. The cause of this breach may be one of those contributory factors relating to drivers highlighted above.
  • You were injured as a result of this breach.

Examples of when you could claim may include:

  • A pedestrian being hit by a bus. If the bus driver failed to stop at a pedestrian crossing because they were not paying due care and attention or were speeding.
  • A motorcycle rider who was going above the speed limit losing control and serving onto the pavement, striking you.
  • The driver of a car not paying due care and attention when reversing out of a driveway and striking you.
